Praise for the Audiobook
My husband (half-Welsh although pure Brit) and I recently had the pleasure of listening to your audiobook version of "Walking Europe's Edge" as we drove our little rented camper van from the north to the south of Portugal. I have the privilege of being the first person to rate your audiobook on Spotify (five stars, of course) and am only sorry their rating system did not give me an opportunity to articulate my praise. Having now arrived in Faro, it behooved me to write and thank you for your thoughtful and delightful book. You have a gift for crafting history into deliciously digestible narrative. (Although I will not use "delicious" to describe the honest and painful critique of Portugal's role in and exploitation of the African slave trade, their failure to acknowledge it, or the brutality of their Imperial ambitions.) I appreciate that you asked the Portuguese people for their insights into their social and economic struggles, rather than relying only on outsiders' perspectives. I loved that you learned early in your travels that there is actually little wit and charm in being "too grumpy a travel writer" and infused the book with your love of Portugal. I have fallen in love with storks, thanks to you, and each one I see perched in some crazy precarious location fills me with joy. We so enjoyed your adventure that we actively sought out some of the places and people you wrote of as we meandered through the country.
From your blog and the articles on your website, I gather that you have indeed found a place for yourself in "Sunny Portugal." I confess that I might to do the same one day, having been charmed by these people, the dramatic landscapes. Thank you again for adding so much to our understanding of Portugal.
I thoroughly recommend Walking Europe’s Edge, a fun, informative, and rewarding listen. I enjoyed exploring Portugal from top right to bottom left in the company of an expert guide who brought the atmosphere and scenery to life. I loved hearing about the kindness of strangers and enjoyed the unusual and personal anecdotes, but I also gained a deeper insight into the Portuguese Empire that was and the historic relationship between Portugal and England. I learned curious facts about the country’s leading modern poet, Fernando Pessoa - the man who never was. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
